Building on the successes of the Initiation/Novice programming, Hockey Canada has developed an Atom Pathway Plan, the next phase in player development.
The Atom Pathway is a progressive, learn to play development guide supporting the transition from Novice to Pee Wee. The pathway outlines an optimal seasonal structure and age appropriate development guidelines and consists of five (5) guiding principles, as well as key recommendations, all focusing on the appropriate development for nine (9) and 10 year old players. The pathway also delivers a positive experience during tryouts by providing pre-tryout ice sessions and avoiding tryouts during the first week of school which can be stressful for players and families.
This pathway is built on the principles of the Long Term Player Development (LTPD), Sport for Life and recruitment and retention initiatives of Hockey Canada. The purpose of this pathway is to develop consistent national best practices for Atom players in every corner of the country. What is being taught in Newfoundland and Labrador is the same model being implemented in British Columbia.
Implementation of the Atom Pathway is targeted for the 2020 - 2021 season, with the opportunity for members to have input on the development of our implementation and to use the program as a pilot for the 2019 - 2020 season.
