New to Hockey? - Hockey Equipment Requirements

U11 Rec 3b

Recreation hockey is designed for players of all skill levels and provides a fun, supportive environment focused on development, teamwork, and enjoyment of the game. The program emphasizes skill development, being part of a team, building confidence, and creating lasting friendships both on and off the ice.

Compared to representative hockey, recreation hockey requires less travel and a lower overall time commitment. Travel is minimal and typically consists of occasional exhibition games and up to two out-of-town tournaments during the season.

At the U11–U18 levels, recreation hockey includes a competitive league structure with regular season standings and playoffs at the end of the season. The top two teams in each division will finish the year by competing in the Night of Champions.

Please see below for recreation program details for each age division.

U18 Recreation Practices: For the 2025/2026 season, we will have a new process in place for U18 recreation practices. It can be challenging for some players in this division to attend regular weekly practices, so KMHA is going to offer a drop-in style practice.

  • If a player is interested in attending a practice for the following week, they will sign up for available practice sessions on the Friday of the previous week.
  • KMHA will post the weekly registration form on the 'Recreation' page of the KMHA website. Players will sign up on the link and will be a first come first serve basis for each session.
  • The interest will determine the number of weekly practices that are held. Players can only attend one practice per week.
  • Head Coaches will rotate through running the sessions.

Female Recreation Hockey

Kamloops MHA intends to have female only recreation teams in all divisions U9 to U18. The number of females registering for Female teams will determine the number of teams that we have.

Female recreation teams in U11 and above will play within an OMAHA administered league so travel throughout the OMAHA district for league games will be required.

Please see the Female Hockey page for more details on the female program.
